Foxes have been known to be one of the most cunning of animals which makes the chase all the more enjoyable. They are generally characterized by the distinctive long narrow snout and bushy tail. The appearances often differ depending on the environment that they live in.

The lifespan of a fox can be up to 10 years but generally they only live about 2 or 3 because of hunting, road accidents, and disease. Even with these staggering statistics, the fox still causes plenty of damage wherever they are.

The fox has been known to wipe out entire species in an area or bring them close to extinction. They use a pouncing technique practiced at an early age and they are able to kill their prey quickly. Foxes are predominately carnivores but will also eat insects and fruit. Their live prey includes lamb, rabbits, mice and other small animals.

The lifestyle of the red fox has become very adaptable as they have been known to live in urban, arid and alpine environments. They are most commonly found in lightly wooded areas as there is the best shelter and food.

They have been spread to many different areas for recreational hunting but were quickly found to be pests.

Tips and Tricks for Fox Hunting:

Tracking foxes can be a tricky process as they do not leave the best tracks. The prints of foxes are similar to a dog print but because of the small size of foxes, you can generally assume that the small prints belong to the fox. Following the tracks of a fox can be difficult because they are light on their feet, they do not leave prints on dry, hard ground. The alternative way to hunt for the fox is by tracking by their feces. It is usually dark in color and looks very different from cat or dog feces. Determining what they are eating can sometimes lead you to where they may be returning to eat.

There are many various forms of fox hunting but generally the best methods are with a shotgun, rifle and whistling.

The difficulty is using a rifle can be great if you are hunting to use the fox pelts. If not then the game gets significantly easier cause your range of weapons is bigger. Keep smaller calibur bullets if you intend to keep pelts. The fox is a very elusive creauture so accuracy is important.

Hunting with a shotgun has become more difficulty because of shooting restrictions so you will need to be able to hit the fox in one or two shots.

Whistling is a way to coax the fox to come to what it may think is a wounded animal. The whistling technique needs to sound loud at first and slowly die down as a wounded rabbit would sound. The sound can sometimes lure foxes as well as others rabbit and small animals. Waiting is key when whistling as the fox can hear the sound from 2 km away. Repeat the sound only if you see no movement after 5 minutes. The route that the fox will generally take to get to the sound will be indirect as it will try to find the best concealment possible. The best time for using the whistling techniques is during dawn and dusk. Whistling is ineffective during the fox breeding season which depends on your location but tends to be at the beginning of winter or during.

Hopefully these tips will help you on your hunt. Enjoy and be safe out there.
